abstract = {Supramol. hosts create unique microenvironments which enable the tuning of reactions via steric confinement and electrostatics. It has been shown that "solvent shaping inside hydrophobic cavities" is an important thermodn. driving force for guest encapsulation in the nanocage host. Here, we show that even small (5%) changes in the solvent composition can have a profound impact on the free energy of encapsulation. In a combined THz, NMR and ab initio MD study, we reveal that the preferential residing of a single DMSO mol. in the cavity upon addition of ≥5% DMSO results in a considerable change of ΔS from 63-76 cal mol-1 K-1 to 23-24 cal mol-1 K-1. This can be rationalized by reduction of the cavity volume due to the DMSO mol. which resides preferentially in the cavity. These results provide novel insights into the guest-binding interactions, emphasizing that the entropic driving force is notably influenced by even small changes in the solvent composition, irresp. of changes in metal ligand vertices. Having demonstrated that the local solvent composition within the cage is essential for regulating catalytic efficiency, solvent tuning might enable novel applications in supramol. chem. in catalysis and chem. separation},

abstract = {Enzyme-like enantiopure supramol. hosts leverage non-covalent and electrostatic interactions to engage substrates in a chiral environment without direct coordination. Elucidating the mechanistic underpinnings of enantioinduction in these systems is critical to the success of this nascent field. We report herein an enantiopure Ga4L12-6 host-catalyzed asym. reduction of aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic oximes to hydroxylamines, without N-O bond cleavage, using pyridine borane as a reductant cofactor. The reaction scope and mechanistic study, in combination with data science anal., showcase that guest recognition and enantioinduction are highly sensitive to both steric and electronic effects. Optimization of interactions between the host, oxime, and reductant within the host cavity enabled highly enantioselective reactivity (>99% ee) for even previously unreported pyridine oximes. The emergent principles outlined herein lay the foundation for future applications of these promising catalytic scaffolds toward challenging synthetic targets.},

abstract = {Catalysis of multicomponent transformations requires controlled assembly of reactants within the active site. Supramol. scaffolds possess synthetic microenvironments that enable precise modulation over noncovalent interactions (NCIs) engaged by reactive, encapsulated species. While mol. properties that describe the behavior of single guests in host cavities have been studied extensively, multicomponent transformations remain challenging to design and deploy. Here, simple univariate regression and threshold analyses are employed to model reactivity in a cascade reduction of azaarenes catalyzed by water-soluble metal organic cages. Yield and stereoselectivity models help deduce unknown mechanisms of reactivity by the multicomponent, host-guest complexes. Furthermore, a comprehensive model is established for NCIs driving stereoselectivity in the reported host-guest adducts.},

abstract = {Dihydrogen complexation, a phenomenon with robust precedent in the transition metal series, is spectroscopically detected for a uranium(III) complex and thereby extended for the first time to the 5f series. The vacant coordination site and low valence of (C5H4SiMe3)3U prove to be key to the reversible formation of (C5H4SiMe3)3U-H2 (complex 1), and the paramagnetism of the f3 center facilitates the detection of complex 1 by NMR spectroscopy. D. functional theory calculations reveal that the delocalization of the 5f electron d. from (C5H4SiMe3)3U onto the side-on dihydrogen ligand is crucial to complex formation, an unusual bonding situation for an actinide acid-base complex. abstract = {The fulvalene diiridium platform was scrutinized for its potential to effect double vicinal C–H activation of C6H6 and C6H12, respectively. For this purpose, an improved preparation of Fv[Ir(CO)2]2 was developed, and the syntheses of the new complexes FvIr(CO)2Ir(CO)(η

            2-C6F6), Fv[Ir(CO)(η

            2-C6F6)]2, Fv[Ir(CH2=CH2)2]2 (X-ray), Fv[Ir(PMe3)(H)2]2 (X-ray), and (2,2′,3,3′-tetra-tert-butylFv)[Ir(CO)2]2 were accomplished. When irradiated in C6H6, these molecules succeeded to varying degrees, and best for (2,2′,3,3′-tetra-tert-butylFv)[Ir(CO)2]2, in the double metalation of the aromatic ring to engender ligating Ir2(ortho-μ-C6H4)(CO)2 (Ir–Ir) moieties, in addition to their precursor mono(phenyliridium hydride) constructs. A competing photochemical pathway is evident by the formation of diastereomers of Fv (or 2,2’,3,3’-tetra-tert-butylFv) [Ir(CO)(Ph)(H)]2 and the resulting dehydrogenated ligated [Ir(CO)(Ph)]2 (Ir–Ir). The structures of FvIr2(ortho-µ-C6H4)(CO)2 (Ir–Ir) and trans-Fv[Ir(CO)(Ph)]2 (Ir–Ir) were corroborated by X-ray analyses. Efforts to realize C–H bond activations with C6H12 generally failed or fared very poorly, with the exception of the tert-butylFv system, which enabled single, but not further, insertion to give (2,2′,3,3′-tetra-tert-butylFv)[Ir(CO)(Cy)(H)][Ir(CO)2] in 34% yield. To explore the relevant chemistry of phenyl- and alkyliridium species attached to Fv, several such derivatives were made by independent routes, adding knowledge to the fundamental behavior of this category of molecules. Where appropriate and for comparative purposes, similar reactions were performed on the corresponding Cp- and 1,2-di-tert-butylCpIr(CO)2 relatives.},

            Metals are adept at shuffling molecular bonds. They pry apart two atoms and then pair each one with a different partner. Sometimes the atoms get stuck on the metal, though, and the newly partnered products aren't released. Kaphan

            et al.

            designed a strategy for accelerating this elimination process (see the Perspective by Yan and Fujita). A hollow supramolecular capsule captured a gold or platinum complex and induced rapid bond formation between the carbon atoms in methyl groups bound to the metal. Generalization of this strategy could open the door to a wide range of chemical transformations that are currently held up by slow eliminations.

abstract = {AbstractThe self‐assembled supramolecular host [Ga4L6]12− (1; L=N,N‐bis(2,3‐dihydroxybenzoyl)‐1,5‐diaminonaphthalene) catalyzes the Nazarov cyclization of 1,3‐pentadienols with extremely high levels of efficiency. The catalyzed reaction proceeds at a rate over a million times faster than that of the background reaction, an increase comparable to those observed in some enzymatic systems. A detailed study was conducted to elucidate the reaction mechanism of both the catalyzed and uncatalyzed Nazarov cyclization of pentadienols. Kinetic analysis and 18O‐exchange experiments implicate a mechanism, in which encapsulation, protonation, and water loss from substrate are reversible, followed by irreversible electrocyclization. Although electrocyclization is rate determining in the uncatalyzed reaction, the barrier for water loss and for electrocyclization are nearly equal in the assembly‐catalyzed reaction. Analysis of the energetics of the catalyzed and uncatalyzed reaction revealed that transition‐state stabilization contributes significantly to the dramatically enhanced rate of the catalyzed reaction.},

abstract = {Cyclic amines can be encapsulated in a water-soluble self-assembled supramolecular host upon protonation. The hydrogen-bonding ability of the cyclic amines, as well as the reduced degrees of rotational freedom, allows for the formation of proton-bound homodimers inside of the assembly that are otherwise not observable in aqueous solution. The generality of homodimer formation was explored with smallN-alkyl aziridines, azetidines, pyrrolidines, and piperidines. Proton-bound homodimer formation is observed forN-alkylaziridines (R= methyl, isopropyl, tert-butyl),N-alkylazetidines (R= isopropyl, tert-butyl), andN-methylpyrrolidine. At high concentration, formation of a proton-bound homotrimer is observed in the case ofN-methylaziridine. The homodimers stay intact inside the assembly over a large concentration range, thereby suggesting cooperative encapsulation. Both G3(MP2)B3 and G3B3 calculations of the proton-bound homodimers were used to investigate the enthalpy of the hydrogen bond in the proton-bound homodimers and suggest that the enthalpic gain upon formation of the proton-bound homodimers may drive guest encapsulation.},
